Sandra KyleSandra has been involved in animal rights since the mid 1990s when she worked as a voluntary coordinator for Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE).
She has conducted regular weekly slaughterhouse vigils for many years, often standing alone, and for two years she was the New Zealand Country Liaison for the worldwide Save Movement. Sandra hosted an award winning animal rights radio show for four years, and in 2019 travelled to India to accept the Philip Wollen Animal Welfare Award which was presented to her by Government Minister Mrs Maneka Gandhi. Sandra has been interviewed on NZ national media a number of times about her activism, and has written many opinion editorials on animal issues. In 2018 she self-published a book calling for the closure of all slaughterhouses in New Zealand by 2025, and in 2020 was one of the international contributors to ‘Vegan Voices’ ed. Dr Joanne Kong). She is a founding member of the Animal Justice Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and serves on the Executive and Policy committees.

An Extraordinary Time To Be Living Through – My Story Arc
A week out from my 75th birthday I will talk about my long involvement in animal rights, from when I first turned vegetarian in the early 1970s, to the present day as a political candidate for the Animal Justice Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. I will talk about solitary slaughterhouse vigils (as part of the Save Movement), singing to the animals waiting to die; organising and attending AR events, demonstrations and marches;and advocating for animals by writing and blogging. I will talk about my most recent extended trip to India to work with street animals, and cover my association with the Animal Justice Party of Aotearoa New Zealand from a chat group that started a little more than a year ago, to registration in August 2023, and my standing as a candidate in the October New Zealand general election. Finally I will bring my ‘story arc’ to a close by predicting that, within my lifetime, we will see a vegan world.
