Animal Rights Forum

The Animal Rights Forum exists to promote networking between Australian animal advocates, to provide opportunities for education and training of activists, and share learned experience among activists across the geographically separated movement in Australia.

The Animal Rights Forum Team host our first conference under our new name in Melbourne, with three presentation streams, a day of activism, this year’s Animal Justice Awards, and the animal defenders expo. We hosted over 30 speakers covering all aspects of animal rights and animal protection for those involved in animal protection theory, legislative reform, direct action, agitation for change, animal care, and those new to animal rights.

The forum will offer a world-class program so don’t miss this opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and advice while interacting with some of Australia’s leading animal rights activists.

Be Inspired

Each year we provide groups across Australia an opportunity to present news of their campaigns. With the scale of the task ahead of us: the establishment of Rights for Animals, it is so easy to become disheartened. We aim for our forum to bring positive news of campaigns that have been effective, whether that is a legal change which helps animals or an innovative campaign to increase the number of people choosing a cruelty free lifestyle, we aim to have good news every year.

Network

The forum isn’t just a chance to hear inspirational speakers, the primary goal for the forum is to facilitate networking amongst people who are passionate about protecting animals. To facilitate networking we have

  • Extensive breaks between talks
  • The opportunity to join others on a sanctuary tour
  • The opportunity to participate in activism
  • A social event
  • Outside our formal schedule there is the chance for representatives of any Animal Protection group to announce themselves and give very a very brief summary of their work in the past year so that participants know who to approach and offer assistance.

Learn

For anyone in animal rights, either those beginning their journey as an animal rights activist or seasoned campaigners there is always the chance to learn something new. We try to include participative workshops during our event, in previous years these have included:

  • How to quickly set up a website
  • Filming and photography for animal campaigners
  • What can we learn from social psychology?
  • How to write to newspapers – and get your letter published
  • Dealing with the media and writing great press releases
  • What’s involved in running a campaign

"United for Change: A Collective Vision for Health, the Planet, and Animals" Discussion Panel

What we eat, how it is produced, and the systems that support animal agriculture have profound environmental consequences. This presentation explores the environmental impacts of livestock farming, including its contributions to climate change, land degradation, water use, and biodiversity loss, and examines why current models of animal agriculture are increasingly under pressure. The talk invites a critical rethink of how food is produced, moving beyond individual consumer choices to consider the broader political, ethical, and ecological dimensions of food systems. Drawing on my research in food system sustainability, I discuss how Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand are responding to these challenges, and explore emerging alternatives, such as plant-based proteins and precision fermentation, that aim to reduce reliance on animals while supporting more just and environmentally sustainable food futures.

"Anti-Vivisection Discussion" Panel

For the first time the Animal Rights Forum will be hosting an International Anti Vivisection panel Discussion session. Never has this issue been more important to expose and campaign against the abhorrent horrors that animals endure behind closed doors in Laboratories.
Animals are not human models, inflicting such pain and torture on them is a violation of their natural rights, this must end. Efforts must be made to encourage the use of more humane effective methods that can better predict human reactions.

"Street Activism" Discussion Panel

Street activism is a powerful tool for social and political change, acting as a visible, direct, and often emotional method to influence public opinion and policy. Hear from local Sydney Activists who outline the Key benefits of street activism, how to avoid conflict, stay resilient and much more.

"Greyhounds Unleashed: Voices Against Racing" Discussion Panel

Join a distinguished panel of greyhound rescuers, advocates, and political changemakers from across Australia and the USA as they share the latest insights on the fight to end greyhound racing in Australia. Gain a clear picture of where the industry stands today, why its future is under growing scrutiny, and how dedicated organisations are elevating greyhound welfare on the world stage. This session offers exclusive updates, powerful strategies for lasting change, and an opportunity to be part of the movement shaping a better future for these gentle dogs who have been mistreated and exploited.

Open Discussion Circle Facilitators

This year we are introducing a new aspect to the forum: Discussion Circles. These will be an opportunity for anyone present to get their voice heard by others, each session on centring the discussion on a different topic. Each discussion circle will be open to 12 people, it’ll be first come, first served!

We pinched this idea from the UK Vegan Animal Rights Conference – thank you!
