Haans has volunteered/worked for the oceans for the last 12 years. Firstly, as an onshore volunteer where she started working the stalls, then moved into teaching at schools and taking on the role of Education Coordinator. After that, she started her first Antarctic campaign in 2013 on the M/Y Steve Irwin as a quartermaster on Operation Relentless and was featured in Animal Planet’s TV show, Whale Wars.
Haans was part of the longest sea chase ever in maritime history on the M/Y Bob Barker chasing a vessel called the Thunder. She was at sea for 147 days, watching as the poachers scuttled their own ship leaving the crew of the Bob Barker to rescue the crew of the Thunder.
“As a crew member, we make many sacrifices and take many risks to help prevent whaling in Antarctica. The horrors we saw around the coast of Africa with overfishing and human trafficking is a reality of the fishing industry that I saw from my own eyes”
Haans did 11 campaigns and sailed all over the world doing her part to help save our oceans and our precious marine life and at the end of 2022, she was asked by Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd to be the Director of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Australia. Haans has many stories to tell and hopes she can be a good role model for young people to follow their dreams and save our planet.
