Animals and Ethical Theory

Does ethical theory support animal rights? Is morality objective or subjective and how does this affect our relationship with animals? Do animal rights still have any standing in the fields of ethics and philosophy? Does an ethical theory (or even a philosophy) that does not include animal rights even deserve to be regarded as an ethical theory at all? This presentation will be an exposition of research and writings by a number of modern ethical theorists of varying prominence who have contributed to the field of animal rights. Ranging from Mary Midgley to Christine Korsgaard and others, we explore ethicists whose works are insufficiently recognised or appreciated. It is hoped that their contributions will strengthen us as activists and give us clearer insights into helping animals.
