Open Discussion: Climate Change and Motivating for Change
As we grapple with the climate crisis, animal agriculture is the elephant in the room. Scientists have shown that livestock farming is one of the largest drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, with estimates ranging from 14.5% to over 50% of the global total. Producing nutrition from beef generates around 60 times more greenhouse gases than producing the same nutrition from beans. Roughly one third of the planet’s habitable land is now devoted to grazing and feed crops, and a global shift to a vegan diet would free up all that land for rewilding, restoring vital natural carbon sinks.
Yet most people have little awareness of the decisive role diet plays in climate change. For animal advocates, this represents a major opportunity: those unmoved by arguments around animal welfare or personal health may be far more receptive once they understand how meat consumption is roasting the planet.
