Suzanne has advocated for animals since 1984 when she first joined Animal Liberation SA. Throughout the 1990s she rescued ducks wounded by shooters at Bool Lagoon, and has campaigned ever since to end duck shooting. She has been actively involved in the Animal Justice Party, and also runs South Aussies for Animals, where she writes submissions, testifies to inquiries and provides information to mobilise supporters. A ban on bow hunting in SA has resulted from such activity.

Bow hunting: the hidden cruelty
Bow hunting is no less cruel than duck shooting, yet it has managed to fly under the radar. There are an estimated 70,000 active bow hunters in Australia, with a majority in NSW, enjoying active government support. There are bow hunting clubs, magazines, and organised tours to bag your trophy.
Arrows fail to penetrate the skull, so the target is heart/lungs. Death occurs by blood loss, so is always painful and often slow. Animals may even escape. There is ample research to show that suffering is inevitable.
Any introduced animal may be targeted, with deer being a favourite. Bow hunters present themselves as conservationists, ridding the country of feral pests. Any genuine conservationist knows that hunting is an ineffective management tool, especially bowhunting which requires firing at close range. SA banned bowhunting in 2024, and hopefully other states can be persuaded to do the same.
